In the era of millennials and introverts, the idea of cuddling up under the blanket with a nice cup of hot something is becoming more and more popular. That is not unreasonable, as we all need those days with a good book in hand, and another world at your fingertips, without having to leave your house. Or, those sick days when you are just comfortably binge-watching Netflix with your special someone.
With social media, images of this are adding up to the hype. Sometimes a cat is in the picture you found on Pinterest, sometimes not. Certainly, a chubby, hand knitted blanket is. What seems to be a warm cup of something is always in the picture. We could spend days estimating what is in those cups, but we have other plans.
Instead, we wanted to give you five ideas for a warm drink you could make yourself so you don’t have to wonder. Here are five recipes perfect for those moments of utter relaxation, that will make that book or TV show even more enjoyable.
You might have rolled your eyes after reading this because, let’s face it, hot chocolate is the common next stop after coffee and tea. You might have indulged in several cups these days, and are feeling a bit sick of it.
Hot chocolate is still first on our list because there is absolutely no need for you to stick to that “hot chocolate in a second” mixture you got at your supermarket. There are numerous ways to spice up the hot chocolate and turn it into a drink you can always come back to when you need a bit of warm comfort.
Our favourite way to spice it up is definitely by adding marshmallows and cream. It is easy to whip up, and it gives it that extra something this comforting drink is missing.
For this, prepare your hot chocolate as you would usually do. Then, you should simply whip one cup of whipped cream, together with 3 ounces of cream cheese, which will give it an incredible texture. Next, pop in some marshmallows. We suggest using smaller ones or chopping the bigger ones into tiny pieces so that they melt faster and more easily. There you have it!
Hot chocolate does not have to taste solely like chocolate, too. If you grind a bit of orange juice in it, you will get an additional treat to your tastebuds. If you add a bit of Bailey’s, that is double the warmth. Cinnamon is also another go-to spice to kick it up a notch!
Hot toddy for a hot tummy can also find its way into your cup. This hot beverage is another great secret pleasure that could help you relax and unwind from a long day. Not only it is delicious, but ingredients can help your immune system as well, so it is truly perfect for those days when you are not feeling your best self.
Basically, you just need a couple of lemons, cloves and alcohol. It is fairly simple to make, so it will not take you too much time, truly important when you are feeling you are about to go down with something.
Boil about a mug of water, and make sure you warm up the cup. You can either stuff it in the microwave for a minute or two or add a bit of boiling water in it while you prepare your hot toddy. While it is warming up, you want to stick about four cloves into the lemon peel.
Now, fill the mug about halfway with boiling water. Add two tablespoons of brown sugar, and stir it to dissolve it. Add lemon juice, prepared lemon peel, drop in some alcohol of your choice, and stir again for it to mesh together.
We found that it works best with bourbon, but any whiskey or scotch will get you there as well!
Warm Bailey’s Delight
Similar to the hot chocolate, Warm Bailey’s Delight is incredibly rich in taste, it is sweet, and is surely bound to make you feel loved from the inside. Not only does it match perfectly with a cosy night in, with the right amount of alcohol, it could also get you ready for a night out. It is up to you to decide the ingredients amount to use and whether you are going to the bed or to a party afterwards!
Warm Bailey’s Delight has it all: cream, a bit of alcohol, and chocolate taste. It is like a hug in a cup, and it is not needy whatsoever. You can prepare it in minutes, it doesn’t take longer than it will take the milk to boil. When you are not looking at it of course, because, let’s admit it, if you are, then it would take ages.
You should boil ta half a cup of milk together with a cinnamon stick, and four to five cardamoms to get the rich taste. Pour the Baileys to fill half the cup that you want to include in your Instagram picture. Add the milk, and feel free to grate some chocolate on top for the right amount of sweetness. Drink it hot, for a warm hug for your insides!
During the long winter evenings, this drink is a blessing. Whether you are drinking on your own because it is healthy or trying to impress and warm up the guests mulled wine is very likely to be the star of the evening.
The best part is the fact that you can make it quite easily, and you probably have a bottle of wine and some citrus in your house already. From there, all you have to do is to make sure that your mulled wine does not boil, so that it doesn’t lose the benefits of alcohol. Simmer it for 15 minutes for a quick fix, or let it for a couple of hours if you have several flavours you are trying to get to work together.
As for the ingredients, you can go with either red or white wine. If you have a bottle of cheap wine you are unlikely to open because you’re not a fan of its taste, it’s perfect. It is the spices that will make your tastebuds happy so that the quality of the wine does not matter. You could also spice it up with another alcoholic beverage, too.
Some of the ingredients you could use are citrus fruits, such as oranges or lemons, which are an important part of tasty mulled wine. You could also add some cinnamon, cloves, or cardamom for the perfect beverage. If you have a sweet tooth, feel free to drop a couple of tablespoons of honey, too!
Irish coffee is the best solution to keep you warm on the inside, as you get a bit of the extra kick from the alcohol. It is very effortless to make nowadays, as people tend to just drop a bit of whiskey into the coffee cup and call it an Irish coffee. That is a great addition to your morning routine, and an uncommon way to start the day, for sure.
Yet, that is a bit of crossing the thin line, as the point is not in the alcohol. The point is in enjoying this hot drink under the blanket so that it comforts you after a long day. This is why the cream of Irish coffee is so important. The original idea is to drink the coffee through the thick cream without that much emphasis on the alcohol.
There are several different ways to make this drink and common ingredients are brewed coffee, Irish whiskey, brown sugar and thick cream. All of these are pretty self-explanatory, and you are free to change it up to accommodate what you already have laying around in your home. For example, instead of brown sugar, you can go with chocolate shavings for a bit of something extra. Make sure the cream is thick, and that there is alcohol, and you are good to go.
There you have it! Five delicious and hot drinks that will have you all warmed up for a cosy evening. Which one are you going for tonight?
